Retinol
This substance, added to moisturizers and other cosmetics, serves as a humectant, attracting water to skin cells. As the skin cells "plump up",the fine lines and wrinkles get filled in. Additionally, once retinol is applied to the skin, it converts into retinoic acid, a biologically active agent that shrinks sebaceous glands (pores) and unclogs follicles, and is used to treat acne, fine wrinkling, and mottled hyperpigmentation.

Thus, as the skin cells are expanding from the inside, the pores and outside skin layers shrink, making the skin appear "tighter", younger and healthier.

If used regularly, applying retinol products may help prevent age-related skin damage. Retinoids rebuild the skin's collagen infrastructure, and thus may provide improvements that persist after the use of the product is discontinued. This effect contrasts with that of the hydroxy acids, which benefit the skin only as long as they are used. Photographs of patients who have used topical retinoids for 5 to 10 years suggest that the benefit may be cumulative. Salicylic acid, a type of topical antibiotic is effective against both whiteheads and cystic acne, while being mild enough to be legal for use WITHOUT a prescription (the others such as erythromycin, clindamycin, sodium sulfacetamide require a prescription because of their potentially serious side effects).
